EduMachinima Fest 2017

Machinima is screencapturing and editing of digital films from video games and virtual worlds. Are your students or maybe you making these? Come join us for screening of the videos and the student and educators awards. Think of it like the Oscars….done EdTech Style with a discussion of all things Machinima from the attendees.

The EduMachinima Fest is a new media Film Festival showcasing games and virtual environment formats combined with cinematic arts to teach, inform, entertain and inspire.

The EduMachinima Fest features both Student and Educator entries in a variety of categories including digital storytelling, tutorials, and narrated gameplay.

Technical achievements such as editing screen capture (machinimatography), sound and special effects, are also recognized. Machinima provides students with an opportunity to express themselves creatively and/or demonstrate content knowledge in sandbox game environments like Minecraft, MMO’s like World of Warcraft, MOBA’s like League of Legends, Dota 2, Overwatch, Heroes of the Storm and virtual environments such as Second Life, Kitley and OpenSim.

Machinima can include real-life video and greenscreen, but always includes some form of digital environment. The fest will feature individual and collaborative works as well as channels with series designed to tell a story or instruct. Yes, Student or Educator, we’d love to see your Twitch channel.

It’s Machinima mania at the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) conference this year! Machinima – it’s a portmanteau of the words machine and cinema. It is the screencapturing and editing of 3D games and virtual environments. Are your students or maybe you making these? They can be made in Minecraft, Roblox, World of Warcraft, Elder Scrolls Online or any other video game or 3D environment.

Here is an example of one of the past winners. Lego Universe- Crumple’s Pet Skunk Tutorial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llf1zfk4nmQ  See the learning happening there.

We’d love for you and your students to submit your Machinima videos. You need not attend the conference to participate. If you or your students are especially prolific in creating Machinima, you can also submit your Machinima channel.

At the 2015 ISTE Conference in Philadelphia, we will be announcing the winners of the 2015 EduMachinima Fest.

Monday, June 29, 5:30–7:00 pm EDT (Eastern Daylight Time)

Machinima Online Open Course

Machinima Open Online Course

To get ready for the SIGVE EduMachinima Fest on June 26th that will be held simultaneously in Second Life and in San Diego, we’re doing a Machinima Open Course! The Machinima Open Online Course will run from June 4- June 18th.

This course is designed for anyone who wants to learn more about Machinima production in virtual worlds and video games. But, it’s special focus is Machinima in education. That is Machinima by students, educators and the community. To give this course a concrete objective – it is focusing on the SIGVE EduMachinima Fest. So the course will be working on a group Machinima for the Fest, give people the opportunity to make their own Machinima, discuss Machinima in education and work on how one can use Machinima in educational outreach. This is an open course – so anyone can participate at whatever level they want. Lurkers are always welcome.  The asynchronous part of the course is at P2PU and the synchronous portion will be in Second Life, OpenSim and other virtual worlds and video games. To sign –up please go to P2PU http://bit.ly/MachinimaP2P

We are also starting to take SIGVE EduMachinima submissions  at

Machinima Star

Machinima Video for ISTE and ISTE SIGVE at Machinima Online Open Course or MOOC

“I Wanna be a Machinima Star”

At P2P U, the Virtual World MOOCers  are doing a parody of a parody.
Based on “Tech Star” video they are making “I Wanna Be a Machinima Star”

There are four different ways of participating if you are interested:

1) Send a 30 second video clip of your avatar or a group of avatars singing ( lips moving)

2) Help us crowdsource rewriting of  the lyrics at http://bit.ly/machinimastar

3)  Do the Machinima MOOC with us as everyone learns more about Machinima and produce one or more versions of this video

4) Help do the outreach that will (hopefully) propel this video viral at ISTE 2012 conference and beyond.
